The European Commission has released its much-awaited Plastics Strategy whose key positive components emphasise the reduction of single use plastics and packaging, restrictions on the use of microbeads in cosmetics and detergents, and prohibitions on the use of oxo-degradable plastics, which break down into microplastics harming our oceans and waterways.

Rethink Plastic, an alliance of Break Free From Plastic members working on European policy, welcomed the strategy as a first step in tackling the plastic pollution crisis.

European institutions are now expected to bring forward ambitious legislation to make it a reality.
